Gym fees in India
What a membership actually costs, by size of city and tier of gym — monthly through annual, with the arithmetic shown. Ranges from research, reviewed July 2026. Never a quote from a named gym.
Gym pricing in India is deliberately hard to compare. The board outside quotes a monthly figure that is really the annual plan divided by twelve; the joining fee appears at the counter; and the "offer" expires the day you visit, every day. This page is the reference table nobody publishes: what each tier of gym costs, in each size of city, at each length of commitment.
Every figure is a range, not a price. It describes a market, not a business. No gym listed anywhere on this site has a price attached to it, and none ever will.
Metro — Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad and their satellite cities.
| Commitment | Budget / neighbourhood gym | Mid-range independent gym | Premium / national chain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | ₹800 – ₹1,500 | ₹1,500 – ₹3,000 | ₹3,000 – ₹6,500 |
| Quarterly (3 months) | ₹2,160 – ₹4,050 | ₹4,050 – ₹8,100 | ₹8,100 – ₹17,550 |
| Half-yearly (6 months) | ₹3,840 – ₹7,200 | ₹7,200 – ₹14,400 | ₹14,400 – ₹31,200 |
| Annual (12 months) | ₹6,720 – ₹12,600 | ₹12,600 – ₹25,200 | ₹25,200 – ₹54,600 |
| Effective cost per month on the annual plan | ₹560 – ₹1,050 | ₹1,050 – ₹2,100 | ₹2,100 – ₹4,550 |
| Personal training, per session | ₹700 – ₹2,500 — charged on top of membership, at every tier | ||
How to read this. The monthly row is the researched range. The longer commitments are derived from it using the discounts Indian gyms most commonly advertise — quarterly at 2.7× the monthly rate, half-yearly at 4.8× the monthly rate, annual at 8.4× the monthly rate — and the arithmetic is shown so you can argue with it. These are ranges for a tier of gym in this size of city. They are not a quote, not an offer, and not attributed to any gym on this site. The only price that is real is the one the gym gives you at the counter.
Large city — State capitals and million-plus cities outside the eight metros.

What you get at each tier
The tiers below are the same everywhere; only the price moves with the city. Prices shown are the metro band — check your own city's page for local figures.
Budget / neighbourhood gym
₹800 – ₹1,500per month, typical range
Free weights, a handful of plate-loaded and cable machines, two or three cardio machines, a fan or two. Usually one floor above a shop, run by the owner, open early morning and evening with a long afternoon gap.
- Weights floor and basic cardio
- Locker (often shared)
- Occasional free trainer guidance
Watch for: Admission or registration fee on top of the monthly rate, air-conditioning charged separately, and 'personal training' quoted per month rather than per session.
Mid-range independent gym
₹1,500 – ₹3,000per month, typical range
Air-conditioned, a full machine circuit, treadmills and cross-trainers, a group-class studio running Zumba, aerobics or functional classes, changing rooms with showers.
- Air-conditioned weights and cardio floor
- Group classes, usually 1–3 a day
- Changing room and showers
- A one-off body-composition check
Watch for: Class access sometimes sits behind a higher plan; steam and sauna are frequently extra; the advertised price is usually the annual rate divided by twelve.
Premium / national chain
₹3,000 – ₹6,500per month, typical range
A branded chain or a large premium independent — full equipment range, multiple studios, structured class timetable, app booking, and in the chains an all-access option covering other centres in the same city.
- Full equipment range and multiple studios
- Booked group classes across the day
- App-based booking and tracking
- Steam, and in some centres swimming
- Multi-centre access on the higher plans
Watch for: The headline price is almost always the annual plan billed upfront; single-centre and all-access plans differ substantially; joining fees and mandatory personal-training packs are common at the top end.
The five questions that decide what you actually pay
- What is the monthly rate, really? Ask for the price if you pay for one month today, with nothing else. That is the honest number. Everything else is a discount structure built on top of it.
- What is the joining or admission fee? Often a full month's fee, often waived if you ask, almost never mentioned first.
- What does the annual plan cost in total, paid today? Not "per month on the annual plan" — the total. Then divide it yourself.
- What is extra? Air conditioning, steam, locker, classes, the app, and personal training are all things some Indian gyms charge separately for. Get the list.
- What happens if I stop? Freeze policy, transfer policy, refund policy. If the answer is vague, assume the answer is no.
Do all five before you hand over anything. The difference between a well-negotiated and a badly-negotiated membership at the same gym is routinely 30 to 40%, which is larger than the difference between two gyms.
Questions
What is the average gym fee in India?
There is no single national figure worth quoting, and any site that gives you one is averaging a Mumbai chain and a small-town neighbourhood gym into a number that describes neither. What is true: a budget gym runs roughly ₹400 – ₹800 a month in a smaller city and ₹800 – ₹1,500 in a metro, while a national chain runs ₹3,000 – ₹6,500 a month in a metro. The band tables above are the honest version of the answer.
Is it cheaper to pay annually?
Almost always, and by a lot. Indian gyms discount hard for cash upfront — an annual plan typically costs about 8.4× the monthly rate rather than 12×, which is roughly a 30% discount. The catch is that you are betting on yourself for twelve months, and gyms know that most people lose that bet by week six. If you have never held a training habit before, pay monthly for three months first; the "wasted" premium is far smaller than a dead annual membership.
What is a joining or admission fee?
A one-off charge on top of the membership, common at mid and premium gyms, often equal to a month's fee. It is the single most negotiable number in the deal — it is frequently waived at the end of a month, during a promotion, or simply if you ask and are willing to walk. Always get the total of joining fee plus membership before comparing two gyms.
Does personal training cost extra?
Yes, at every tier and in every city. Expect ₹400 – ₹1,200 a session in a mid-size city and ₹700 – ₹2,500 in a metro, usually sold as a pack of 10 or 12 rather than singly. Some premium chains bundle an "assessment" or a handful of sessions into the joining fee, which is a sales step rather than coaching.
Where do these figures come from?
They are ranges compiled from membership pricing that gyms and national chains publish themselves, reviewed July 2026, grouped into four city bands. They are indicative and they move. Nothing here is a quote from a named gym, and this site never publishes a price attributed to an individual business — see the method page for exactly how the ranges are built and where they are weakest.
